Sandler Cashes In

It looks like Jim Carrey isn't the only doofus in Hollywood's $20 million club anymore. Propelled by the runaway success of The Waterboy, Adam Sandler landed a two-picture deal with New Line Cinema that will give him earning power comparable to that of Carrey, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, and Mel Gibson.

USA Today reports that the former Saturday Night Live comic will earn close to $20 million for an upcoming film called Little Nicky, and a larger sum for a yet-to-be-determined comedy. The rest of the details are still leaking out of Hollywood's smoky backrooms.

Sandler originally signed on to Little Nicky, a Dad-is-the-devil laugher, back in February, agreeing upon a $12.5 million payday. But when The Waterboy surged to a $39 million opening weekend in early November, Sandler and New Line sat back down to sweeten the Nicky deal, and sign up for another picture.

Noting that New Line was the distributor of The Wedding Singer, Sandler's first big-time box-office hit, studio president Michael DeLuca says, "We have every intention of being a part of his success for a long time to come." Sandler's next film, the romantic comedy Big Daddy, is due out in June from Columbia Pictures.
