January 29, 1999 Quick Hits: Sandler, Madonna, More
Adam Sandler is unlikely to get an Oscar nod for his moving work in The Waterboy, but he can take some small comfort in being named Comedy Star of the Year at ShoWest 1999, the annual gathering of theater owners.
The Hollywood trades report that Sandler, who also had a hit last year with The Wedding Singer, won a similar honor in 1997 from ShowEast, making him the first celeb to nab comedy honors from both groups. The funnyman will receive his award on March 9 during a ceremony at Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas.
Not everyone is a Sandler fan, however. Bill Murray, who's a favorite to land an Oscar nomination for the upcoming comedy Rushmore, tells the New York Times magazine, "I would enjoy driving in L.A. with the windows open more than I would enjoy watching The Waterboy."
Linda Hamilton says ex James Cameron did her a favor when he ran off with actress Suzy Amis. "Actually, I was delivered by God when he left," she tells TV Guide. Hamilton recently dished to USA Today that the Titanic filmmaker was an "absolutely miserable, miserable, unhappy man." Madonna's little girl is growing up so fast. The New York Daily News reports that little Lourdes is applying to prekindergarten. Mama Madonna and Papa Carlos Leon accompanied their pride and joy to an interview at a "prestigious preschool" in Manhattan.
Insiders tell the paper that the world-famous 2-year-old "passed with flying colors." Martin Scorsese, Marisa Tomei, and Mimi Rogers have bolted from Creative Artists Agency in favor of Michael Ovitz's Artists Management Group, reports Daily Variety. The escalating battle between the rival firms culminated Monday when CAA issued an ultimatum to six of its clients telling them to choose between the two. Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, and Lauren Holly are still undecided.
Tom Hanks has plunked down some serious green to catch his favorite teams play. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Saving Private Ryan star has leased a 12-seat luxury suite at the new Staples Center for $257,500 a year. For that price, Hanks will be able enjoy a wet bar, a refrigerator, and an entertainment center with wide-screen digital TV while watching the Lakers, Clippers, and Kings battle their opponents. The stadium is scheduled to open in October.
Country crooner Tanya Tucker, 40, is expecting a bundle of joy around July 4, her rep tells USA Today. The father is songwriter Jerry Laseter. Tucker has two children from her ex-beau Ben Reed.
When A Bug's Life lands on video store shelves April 20, you'll be able to choose which character you'd like to take home. Disney and Pixar have announced that the animated flick will arrive in four different packages each featuring a different insect: loser ant Flik, little ant Dot, ladybug Francis, and corpulent caterpillar Heimlich.
