Razzies Name Hollywood's Worst

The Oscars celebrate the best films and performances in showbiz, but what about the movies and actors who really stink up the big screen? That's what the Razzies are for.

Sylvester Stallone and Madonna were named the Worst Actor and Actress of the last century, and Kevin Kline and Will Smith were "honored" as the Worst Screen Couple of 1999 at the 20th Razzie Awards, a pre-Oscars Hollywood tradition that recognizes the worst Hollywood has to offer.

Wild Wild West, the over-budget box-office bomb based on the 1960s television Western of the same name, snagged the dubious achievement of sweeping the Razzies with five awards — taking the Razzie for Worst Picture of the Year, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Song, and Worst New Screen Couple for Kline and Smith.

Film critic Roger Ebert has said the pair had "so little screen chemistry that they seem to be acting in front of rear-screen projections of each other." Adam Sandler was named Worst Actor of the Year for playing the "amazingly idiotic adoptive father" in Big Daddy, and Heather Donahue was named Worst Actress for her role as the irritating director in The Blair Witch Project. Jar Jar Binks, the widely reviled computer-generated annoyance from Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace that some critics claimed was based on a racial stereotype, was named Worst Supporting Actor. Denise Richards, the tank-topped "nuclear physicist" from the latest James Bond epic, The World Is Not Enough, was singled out as Worst Supporting Actress.

A special Razzie was also awarded to Showgirls as the decade's Worst Film, and regular Razzie targets Stallone and Madonna were named Worst Actor and Actress of the 20th Century. Quite an achievement, indeed. Razzie creator John Wilson said Internet voting was still going on to pick the Worst Films of the Century in a poll to be called "100 Years, 100 Stinkers," being conducted on the Razzie Web site (www.razzies.com). The actual Razzie award, given by The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, is a gold spray-painted plastic raspberry sitting atop a mangled Super 8 film reel. It now has an inflation-adjusted estimated street value of approximately $4.27.
