Adam
Sandler was born on September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in
Manchester, New Hampshire. His first brush with comedy was at age 17 when his
brother encouraged him to go on stage spontaneously at a Boston comedy club.
Until then, comedy had never entered his mind as a profession, but after his
first appearance, he was hooked.
He
later attended New York University, earning a degree in Fine Arts. While still
in college, he continued to perform regularly in comedy clubs and universities
throughout New York. He gained a spot on The Cosby Show as a friend of
Theo. Shortly thereafter, he was recruited from the stand-up world (via MTV's
television show, Remote Control) and then landed a coveted spot as part
of the Saturday Night Live cast/writing team, first appearing in the
1990/91 season. In 1990, Adam made a short appearance in an ABC after-school
special entitled Testing Dirty.
With
SNL for five years, as both a writer and performer, Sandler gained national
recognition creating a host of unique characters including "Cajun Man," "Opera
Man," "Canteen Boy," "Herlihy Boy" and "the host of the 'Denise Show.'" He also
performed memorable impersonations of Axl Rose and Eddie Vedder, and did guest
spots on the popular "Weekend Update." One irate L.A. Times reader described
Saturday Night Live's Adam Sandler after the paper ran a profile on him
as "The most talentless, juvenile and offensive member of the current cast."
Adam's
career expanded more with the release of They're all gonna laugh at you!
in September 1993 and he immediately went on to receive a Grammy nomination,
even as it made its unprecedented run up the charts, spending over 100 weeks
on Billboard's Heatseekers listings alone. The album spawned the hit single
"Lunchlady Land" as well as the popular video "Buddy," while bringing back "The
Thanksgiving Song" and showing the world "The Buffoon." With the release of
What The Hell Happened To Me? in 1996, Adam introduced a host of more
Sandler characters while continuing to maintain the element of complete, and
completely hilarious and originality. Adam's latest CD is What's Your Name?,
an all music (also his least successful) album including "The Lonesome Kicker"
and "The Goat Song." It was released in 1997. His next album, Stanley and
Judy's Kid, is set to be released in late 1999.
Sandler's
film career kicked into high gear starting with a small cameos in Shakes
the Clown and in Coneheads, followed by co-starring roles in Airheads
and MixedNuts. Sandler's began his starring role in Universal's
Billy Madison, a box office smash that he co-wrote. Next up in the film
arena for Sandler was his second Universal comedy, Happy Gilmore, a great
success! Soon after, he co-starred with Daymon Wayons in the action/comedy Bulletproof.
Next, Adam Sandler starred in The Wedding Singer, which became even more
successful than any of his previous movies. He even won a 1997 MTV Movie Award
for the "Best Kiss" category for his kiss with Drew Barrymore in that movie.
The Wedding Singer stars Sandler as the ultimate master of ceremonies
who guarantees all a good time... until he gets left at the altar of his own
wedding. This transforms him into a newlyweds' worst nightmare -- an entertainer
who can do nothing but destroy what is supposed to be the perfect day. The WaterBoy
was Adam's next movie, released in November, 1998. It is about a simple-minded
Cajun waterboy for a football team that is put on the team and wins the heart
of the small Lousiana town that he resides in.
The
latest Sandler movie release is Big Daddy, a comedy about a toll-booth
operator who adopts a kid so that his girlfriend will think he is more mature.
It was released in the summer of 1999. Next, he plans to put out Little Nicky,
a movie where he stars as the devil, and a Saturday-morning cartoon show. Most
recently, he released a skit/musical comedy album entitled Stanley and Judy's
Kid, including the second installment of The Chanukkah Song.
