HOMEY THE CLOWN MEETS OPERA MAN

Who would have ever conceived of an action movie pairing two comedians more famous for their TV roles than their big-screen muscle? And who would have envisioned that movie being No. 1 at the box office at the tailend of a summer marked by action-movie flops? Well, whoever conceived of it, it's working. In Bulletproof, Damon Wayans, of In Living Color fame, and Adam Sandler, of Saturday Night Live notoriety, have become Hollywood's latest successful ebony and ivory, crime-solving team.

RC: Guys, what do you think is so special about your chemistry that you were able to shoot this film and not overlap your comedic talents?
WAYANS: I think it just comes down to respect for what each one of us brings to the table and being enthusiastic about working with each other.
SANDLER: I know Damon is funny as hell. That's why I wanted to work with him. It feels good to be able to sit back and let someone else kill. And that's' what he did.

RC: So when was the seed for this movie planted?
SANDLER: When I thought about it, Damon was hosting Saturday Night Live, and I was talking to my agent and his agent. So I was telling my guy that I wanted to do an action movie with Damon. And then when Damon came on the show, I told him that and then we found the script.

RC: Did you guys sit there and ever talk--I mean, how much of each other's material were you familiar with?
WAYANS: Well I think we probably know each [other's stuff]. It's your job as a comedian to be up on what's funny. But for me to be performing Homey the Clown for him or him to do Opera Man for me, we'd drive each other crazy, you know what I mean? That's no fun. So it's just talking about other things that are funny and making jokes about other people behind their backs, that's what we do...
SANDLER: Yeah, hurting other people is what it's all about [both laugh].

RC: There are some scenes in there that--I don't know if they were improvised or not--but I don't know how you guys didn't bust out laughing, like when Adam's talking to the thing when he's changing and he peed on himself...
WAYANS: Oh yeah.

RC: I mean, I don't know how you didn't just crack up.
WAYANS: Well, first of all, it wasn't a fun scene to--I mean it was a fun scene but...
SANDLER: ...[it's] in the desert.
WAYANS: It was hot and we were both pretty angry because we had to be there [Sandler laughs].
SANDLER: Yeah, that was an angry shot, man.
WAYANS: In the middle of nowhere.
SANDLER: They said, "We want you to go out there and [for] the scene after you fall down peeing, maybe come up with something." So we were both so angry that we couldn't go eat [both laugh].
WAYANS: And there were, like, snakes and scorpions and we were walking through this, and acting.
SANDLER: Yeah.
WAYANS: Like we're not scared of snakes or scorpions [Sandler laughs].

RC: Are there any scenes that you are particularly proud of or that you think are really your highest comedic moments? Or your lowest?
WAYANS: Well [Sandler laughs], what I like really is the drama of it. We can do comedy in our sleep, you know, but to be believable, that's hard for a comedian.

RC: Well, you definitely made a film that people talk to. I don't know if you guys are aware of this, but you guys did a very good job of you know bringing the audience in and getting them involved in your friendship and everything.
WAYANS: Thanks.
SANDLER: Cool.
WAYANS: Didn't know that.

RC: So is there any room for perhaps a Bulletproof 2 or do you guys have any plans to do anything else together in the future?
WAYANS: One, it's not good to talk about the sequel until the first one does well. And then second of all, it's important--if it does do well--to find a story that works just as well as this story worked. And to add layers of comedy on top of that. Because just to do it for the money--unless it was a lot of it [all laugh]--is you know...
SANDLER: It's just...
WAYANS: ...not a good feeling.
SANDLER: You feel guilty. I mean, I've done it the whole time just for the money, and I'm starting to feel guilty about it [Wayans laughs].
